It is my privilege to introduce the Postgraduate Department of Pharmacology, which has came into existence since the establishment of Government Medical College Srinagar in year 1959. The Department has the honor of producing many postgraduates who turned out to be the stalwarts of the medical fraternity.

Events and Awards

  • The Department has been recognized by Medical Council of India (MCI) for postgraduate course in October 2017 after-five long decades since the establishment of Medical College. The Postgraduate Medical Education Committee of Medical Council of India, considered the Council Assessor’s report (01/07/2017) and decided to recommend to the Central Government that MD Pharmacology qualification for 2 (Two) seats granted by University of Kashmir (Kashmir) in respect of students being trained at Government Medical College Srinagar, Kashmir be recognized in the 1st Schedule to the M.C act, 1956. The Postgraduate Medical Education Committee further decided that the recognition so granted shall be for maximum period of 5 years from the date of notification (PG Com. Dt. 10.10.2017 No. MCI-79(22)/2017-Med./) upon which the institute shall have to apply for renewal of recognition. Failure to seek timely renewal of recognition as required shall invariable result in stoppage of admission the PG course.

  • During the last few years our PG Scholars have been presented with PG Thesis Presentation awards. (Dr. Junaid Ahangar and Dr Adil Shah have bagged 1st and 3rd.
  • Seminars titled hands on training for healthcare professionals about the importance of identification and reporting of ADRs are being conducted on a regular basis since 2017 in which 187 participants have been sensitized till date.
  • ADR reporting form has been incorporated in the files to make it convenient for ADR reporting. Now ADR monitoring centre address, Toll free no. and Patient safety Pharmacovigilance associate number is also inculded in the OPD slip of hospital.
  • The department also runs an Animal house for intact animal experiments for teaching purposes and also provides facilities to other departments like Anatomy and Microbiology for post-graduate research and for Diagnostic purpose respectively.
  • (Dr) Samina Farhat was appointed as an assessor for DNB Pharmacology in GMC Anantnag and Kathua.
  • PG Department of Pharmacology has started prescription auditing in SMHS and Associated Hospitals.
  • Furthermore our Department has started Antibiotic stewardship programme to stop antibiotic resistance.
  • The Department is also performing active surveillance for Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) for COVID-19 vaccination drive.
