Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital, commonly known as SMHS Hospital or Headwin Hospital, is the multi-disciplinary Government Hospital situated at Gole Market, Karan Nagar area of Srinagar.The SMHS Hospital, one of the largest Tertiary Care Hospitals of Kashmir Valley was established in 1948 in Karan Nagar in the heart of Srinagar city as a government owned general hospital to render patient care services to needy patients. Initially the Hospital was established with OPD & IPD services in the specialties of General Medicine, General Surgery and Gynecology.
In 1959, after inauguration of Govt. Medical College, Srinagar on the same campus, SMHS hospital, Srinagar emerged a major teaching institute imparting training to undergraduate as well as postgraduate (MBBS) students (MBBS) in all allied specialties of medical surgery and gynecology.
In 1970’s as medical surgeries become more specialized and differentiated. Separate Hospitals were established for specialties like Obstetrics and Gynecology and Orthopedics etc. The shifting of the concerned departments coincided with the expansion and differentiation of the major specialties of Medicine and Surgery.
The sanctioned Bed Strength for the hospital is 750.Inpatient Ward (1-20)

- Ward 4: Department of Dermatology.
- Ward 7 & 8 :Department of Ophthalmology.
- Wards 12,15,16, 18,19 & 20: Department of Surgery.
- Ward 13: Medical I.C.C.U.
- Ward 17:Surgical I.C.C.U.
