About Department

The Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College Srinagar(Bone and Joint Surgery Hospital) is very important Orthopaedic Hospital in Northern India and only Orthopaedic trauma hospital which caters the needs of the Kashmir valley, Leh,Ladakh and Kishtwar, Poonch,Rajoori and Ramban districts of Jammu Division. The Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical  College Srinagar started an extension of General surgery in the year 1959 when Government Medical College, Srinagar was established. In the year 1970 the department separated from General Surgery and the iconic orthopaedic surgeon Prof. Garewal took over the reins of the department. The concept of separate Hospital for Bone and Joint Surgery, was conceived by Late Prof. Farooq Ashahi and it was through his extra ordinary efforts that this hospital was dedicated to general public way back in the year 1982.Presently the Department of Orthopaedics is 200 bedded hospital with attached Department of Physiotherapy Rehabilitation and Artificial Limb Centre.
